Definition
Orienteering is a cross-country race in which competitors use a map and compass to find their way through unfamiliar territory via a series of "control" points. Orienteering is often called the "thinking sport" because it involves map reading and decision-making in addition to a great workout. Orienteering is a sport for everyone, regardless of age or experience. Most events provide courses for all levels. In addition, many specialty events abound such as rogaines, where competitors find as many control points as possible in a given period of time, and also races that use different modes of travel, such as skiing or biking.
