Definition

Adventure racing is a sport that combines three or more modes of travel while navigating through a course. In addition to orienteering, disciplines usually include trail running, mountain biking and paddling, though races may incorporate rope sections(rappelling and/or ascending), mountaineering, whitewater swimming, canyoneering, and other activities as well. Although traditionally a co-ed team sport, some races now permit solo and single-sex teams. Races vary in length and difficulty and are usually categorized by the amount of time an average team would take to complete the course. Sprint races may run only a couple of hours, while expedition races may last up to ten days or longer.
